King penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) The second largest extant penguin (see drawings of proto-penguin and 'giant' penguin for earlier 'versions'). This beautiful bird can be seen on Macquarie Island in the subantarctic. They were hunted nearly to extinction and rendered for their blubber right up to the early 20th century. They are no longer considered endangered.
