New Zealand white-capped albatross (Diomedia steadi) Formerly a subspecies of the shy group, this bird has now been recognised as a distinct species due to morphological and genetic differences. Perhaps the most important feature is that all three species of shy mollymawks breed in separate colonies and for conservation purposes need to be recognised as separate. Mostly breeding in New Zealand on the Auckland Islands. We often see them around Stewart Island and off Kaikoura on our pelagic trips.
