Northern royal albatross (Diomedia epomophora sanfordi) Toroa Two endemic subspecies are recognised and distinguishable by the amount of black on the upperwings. The smaller northern royal albatross pictured here, breeds at Taiaroa Head near Dunedin and Sisters and Forty Fours Islands in the Chathams Group. We visit the small colony near Dunedin on our New Zealand 'Aoteoroa' tour. Intensive predator control and monitoring of breeding activity has enabled this colony to survive after the first successful breeding here in 1938. Around 25 pairs breed at Taiaroa Head.
