Benefits
The oil has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, and also acts as a strong antioxidant. It can be used as a natural substitute for antibiotics, and it is especially effective against bacteria that are resistant to other medicines. It can be used as a natural mouthwash or toothpaste, and it can relieve gum infections and tooth decay. It can also be applied topically to burns, scrapes and cuts to help heal them.
Manuka honey has anti-inflammatory properties, and can be used to treat indigestion and gastrointestinal tract problems. It is particularly helpful in reducing stomach ulcers, because it has been shown to control the growth of the bacteria that cause them.
Studies have found that manuka oil has activity against harmful oral bacteria, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, that contribute to gum disease and tooth decay. It can also soothe respiratory infections, such as bronchitis and the common cold. It can also help manage the side effects of cystic fibrosis, including a build-up of thick mucus in the lungs.
Uses
Honey has long been a natural antimicrobial agent, and Manuka honey is even more powerful in this respect. Studies show that it can kill sore throat-causing bacteria, sooth digestive illnesses, and reduce gingivitis. It is also effective in treating wounds, and can decrease pain and shorten healing time. It is also believed to boost immunity and assist with the recovery process after surgery or cancer treatments.
Our Manuka blend is made from a combination of monofloral and multi-flower honeys to provide the most versatile use of this golden liquid superfood. This includes a range of beauty uses, like in a face mask, as a natural hummus substitute, or as a low-calorie sweetener in tea and smoothies.
Monofloral Manuka honey is also used as a hair treatment for its anti-dandruff properties and to help reduce itchy scalp, and can be added to toothpaste or mouthwash to promote oral health and reduce plaque. It can also be applied directly to blemishes, such as milia, to soothe and soften them.
Ingredients
Our Manuka Blend has been sourced from a pristine region, and is unpasteurized and raw – preserving the full spectrum of natural enzymes and antioxidants. This ensures that it is high in methylglyoxal (MGO), which has been shown to have unique antibacterial properties.
MGO-rich manuka honey has been proven to be particularly effective at healing wounds and reducing inflammation – studies show that it supports tissue regeneration, reduces the presence of bacteria in superficial partial thickness burns and is even effective against bacteria that resist antibiotic treatment, such as MRSA. It has also been found to control the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth, a common side effect of chemotherapy-induced mucositis.
Its antibacterial properties can be used topically, to clean wounds and cuts – simply mix with water to form an effective cleanser. It can also be used as a household cleaner, and can be combined with white distilled vinegar to help remove stubborn soap scum from showers and sinks.
Storage
Manuka honey is long-lasting and can be kept indefinitely. Store in a cool dark place away from heat and sunlight to keep it fresh and avoid spoilage. Honey is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture from the air which will cause it to ferment or spoil.
Studies have shown that manuka honey can inhibit the growth of a number of bacteria, including the MRSA strains of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which are commonly found in hospitals and nursing homes. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia spp.
Our Manuka Blend is sourced from the flower of the Leptospermum scoparium plant in New Zealand and blended with rich and herbaceous other native New Zealand bush honeys like Rewarewa and Kamahi to create a smooth, delicious and versatile spread. The honey is labelled with its UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) which indicates the amount of Methylglyoxal it contains. This is a unique grading system that measures the medicinal properties of the honey and provides consumers with a clear and simple indication of the benefits they can expect from their purchase.
